Calcium

Introduction
Calcium is found to be the most abundant mineral present in the human body. A normal healthy body has about 2-3 lbs. of calcium, mostly contained in the bones and teeth. Calcium is essential for all humans because it prevents and cures a wide range of diseases in addition to performing some basic functions for our bodies.
Remedy
Calcium is known to help manage the following:
  • Cancer.
  • Diabetes.
  • Heart disease.
  • Hypercholesterolemia (high blood cholesterol).
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure).
  • Nerve transmission.
  • Periodontal disease.
  • Osteoporosis.
  • Osteoarthritis.
  • Osteomalacia.
  • Rickets.
  • Arthritis.
  • Tetany (muscle spasms such as leg cramps).
  • Insomnia.
  • Nervousness.
Prevention
Calcium prevents the body against:
  • Heart disease.
  • Osteoporosis.
  • Cancer.
  • Development of pre-eclampsia during pregnancy.
What It Does
  • Calcium aids tooth and bone formation.
  • It also functions in soothing the nerves.
  • It helps in blood clotting and wound healing.
  • It normalizes blood pressure.
  • It is essential in the production and activity of various enzymes.
  • It transports nutrients across cell membrane.
  • Calcium helps in the contraction of muscles.
  • It facilitates nerve transmission and helps to metabolize iron.
Benefits
Calcium is helpful in the healing and cures of:
  • Arthritis
  • Backache
  • Bone pain
  • Foot and leg cramps
  • Insomnia
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Menstrual cramps
  • Pre menstrual syndrome (PMS)
  • Menopause
  • Nervousness
  • Rheumatism
  • Teenage growing pains
Sources
Calcium could be found in the following:
  • Peanuts
  • Walnuts
  • Sesame seeds
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Dried beans
  • Green vegetables
  • Dairy products
Friends
  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin D
  • Iron
  • Magnesium
  • Manganese
  • Phosphorous
Enemies
  • Oxalic acid, found in rhubarb and chocolate
  • Excess fat
  • Phytic acid, present in grains
Cautions
  • A dose more than 200 mg per day may lead to hypocalcaemia.
  • Calcium supplements should not be taken by patients of kidney disease, kidney stone, cancer and hyperthyroidism.
  • Calcium is found to interfere with the effects or verapamil, which is a calcium channel blocker and is often used to cure heart problems and high blood pressure.
  • Bodies with a large consumption of animal protein uses a lot of calcium for excretion, thus to avoid taking in calcium supplements one should better concentrate on the intake of animal protein.
  • Calcium is not good for the patients of prostate cancer.
Side Effects Or Interactions
In earlier years, a large consumption of calcium from dairy products in addition to calcium supplements was said to result in a condition known as “milk alkali syndrome”. This condition is now rare perhaps because doctors no more prescribe patients of ulcer to use this method of treatment. Constipation, bloating and gas are said to be common side effects of calcium supplements. There are a number of other minerals that compete with calcium for absorption, thus people who are on calcium supplements for a week or so should also take multi mineral supplements as well. The latest research on animals has shown that calcium absorption from the gut is increased by essential fatty acids. This is done in part by enhancing the effects of Vitamin D and a reduction in the loss of calcium in urine. Lysine is said to increase the amount of calcium absorbed and decrease the amount of calcium excreted.
